Supporting the work of Minnesota Latino Youth

Team member Adrian Diaz coordinates Latino Youth programs with La Oportunidad, a local non-profit serving the Latino community. This summer he organized a hands-on, dynamic youth program, “Latino Power,” with an emphasis to empower and strengthen the skills of Latino high school and college students to become active leaders in their community. As part of the program, the group of students organized a community event at Powderhorn Park in Minneapolis.

The event, “Latinos en Accion,” centered on discussing the issues that affect Latinos in Minnesota. CDG worked with students to develop a Spanish engagement toolkit to offer event attendees the opportunity to give their opinions about positive things that exist their community, as well as the challenges and barriers they face. The engagement toolkit was composed of dot-boards where participants were given a set of options where they identified existing assets and challenges.

Students facilitated the entire event and ran the engagement with the toolkits they helped create. Around 125 people attended the event and participated in the various activities. Results gathered will be presented by the students to the Governor’s Office of Inclusion to talk about potential changes for Latinos.

Additional to the discussion and engagement, there was an Ecuadorian folkloric dance performance, break dance group, art activities, zumba class, food, and music. CDG was happy to support the work and projects of young Latino talent.
